Vantagens:
- Capacidade para aumentar a produtividade agrícola;
- Tolerância a herbicidas;
- Resistência a pragas;
- Os alimentos são mais nutritivos;
- Desenvolvimento de espécies alimentares com características desejáveis;
- Reduz o gasto de dinheiro em pesticidas (vantagem económica);
- Maior nível de protecção de plantas, aumentando a sua durabilidade e protecção contra agressores externos (insectos);

Desvantagens:
- Resistência das bactérias existentes no organismo humano a antibióticos;
- Alergias alimentares;
- Problemas gastrointestinais;
- Diminui a quantidade de substâncias benéficas, incluindo as protegem contra o cancro;
- Diminui a diversidade genética na agricultura;

Comentem!! Deixem a vossa opinião!!

Transgenic

What are they?
Are genetically modified organisms (GMOs) reared in the laboratory, whose genetic material has been altered with a technology that allows the introduction of specific genes from one organism in another, in order to give some quality that does not have making it more advantageous. Scientists and agrochemical industry representatives argue that GM crops are a powerful agent of preservation of the environment, in that the genes for pest resistance and herbicide tolerance allow to reduce the use of poison on crops.
Will GM be even good for the environment?

As with everything in life there are advantages and disadvantages

Advantages:
- Ability to increase agricultural productivity;
- Tolerance to herbicides;
- Resistance to pests;
- Food is more nutritious;
- Development of food species with desirable characteristics;
- Reduce spending money on pesticides (economic advantage);
- Increased level of protection of plants, increasing its durability and protection against external aggressors (insects);
- Delayed ripening of food such as tomatoes.

Disadvantages:
- Resistance of bacterias in the human organism to antibiotics;
- Food allergies;
- Gastrointestinal problems;
- Decreases the amount of beneficial substances, including protecting against cancer;
- Decreases the genetic diversity in agriculture;
- Increase the risks to human health.

 GMOs are not only used in foods, are also used in animals:
   Transgenic animals are those whose genome has been modified to include genes from other animals or other species.
Thus, transgenic animals have their hereditary estates permanently modified by the introduction of DNA in their germ cells.
    Transgenic techniques have been applied to several species including sheep, cows, chickens, goats, fish, pigs and rabbits, but mice have been without doubt the most used animal and with greater success.

However, here are three questions:
- Is it right to use animals for experiments of this kind?
- What are the environmental and evolutionary consequences of this type of genetic manipulation?
- Are GMOs a good food for the future?

And you? What do you think? Do you agree in the use of trangenics on food and animals? Comment! Let us know your opinion!

One of the themes in our Biology class was about Epigenetics. And what is this? you ask. In this post I will explain what this is of Epigenetics and I believe for those who still do not know will be a little surprised as I was.

Epigenetics:

Are you a stressed out person? You are obese / a? Do you smoke? Epigenetics is the science that explains our habits can alter our DNA and wreak havoc on the table for our progeny.

Often we lament not the blue we inherited from our mother's eyes but also often do not appreciate being obese as our father. As we know, the information of our DNA comes from a mixture of DNA from our parents at the time of fertilization, but oddly enough we can inherit characteristics that our parents have earned in life. According to psychiatrist and professor at the School of Medicine, Mount Sinai Rachel Yehuda did not even think the word epigenetics in New York when he opened a clinic for the treatment of survivors of the Nazi Holocaust, in 1992. In a short time, and to her surprise, she noticed that many of the victims' children, born a few years after the end of World War II, also had symptoms of stress above the ordinary, despite not having lived some of the horrors experienced by their parents.

Scientists have noted that children born to women who witnessed the September 11th show more chance of developing stress. And that children of smokers have an increased likelihood of obesity. Rachel Yehuda and Jonathan Seckler joined, then, after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 to study the consequences of the traumatic moment in offspring of women who were pregnant at the time of the terrorist attack. So far, they discovered something intriguing: children have a level of cortisol (a hormone linked to stress) in the blood higher than the average population.

 What can also change our DNA is the environment that surrounds us. To better understand this I will give you an example: Two twins, which as we know has the same genes, will reach adulthood and decide to live in different environments, a chosen field and another city. After a few years it is noticed that both are not as physically similar as the environment for many years who attended changed their DNA. In the first video below shows it to people who are genetically identical can become very different due to the environment that surrounds them.

Behind this concept, epigenetic, may be the key to discovering the influence of environment and genetic background in our routine that we pass on to our offspring.

The videos helps to understand better what is Epigenetics (above, in portuguese post)

With this, we can see that many of the salient facts of our lives or even our daily habits can later be reflected in our children and as such, in my opinion, we should pay attention to our habits such as smoking be because this our "feature" that we acquire in life can be inherited for our children and of course no parent wants that to happen.
Admired? Believe it because it's true. I hope this post is useful for people who want to have children later and a lesson to those who have a life with too much stress can harm our children.

Take life with tranquility:) No stress:)

Leucemia

•    As células sanguíneas brancas (glóbulos brancos)
As células sanguíneas vermelhas (glóbulos vermelhos)
•    As plaquetas

  • Divulgar informação sobre o Cancro e promover a Educação para a Saúde, nomeadamente quanto à sua prevenção;
  • Contribuir para resolver a situação dos doentes oncológicos em todas as fases da história natural da doença;
  • Cooperar com as Instituições envolvidas na área da oncologia, nomeadamente com os Centros do Instituto Português de Oncologia de Francisco Gentil;

Hey guys, today we start to talk about cancer.

Cancer is characterized by cells that grow and divide without respect to normal limits, invade and destroy adjacent tissues, and if not treated immediately can spread to distant places in the body through a process called metastasis.
I'll talk a little bit of a case of cancer, leukemia.

I hope you enjoy and find it useful. ;)

So leukimia is a disease that begins in blood cells

Blood cells are formed in the bone marrow and when immature cells we called them stem cells. Normally blood cells mature in bone marrow and then they go to blood vessels.

The bone marrow produces different types of blood cells. Each type has a special function:

  •  The white blood cells (WBC)
  • The red blood cells (RBCs)
  •  Platelets

In people with leukemia, the bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells, those are leukemia cells, over time, exceed in number the normal white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. Making it difficult to get the blood to fulfill their duties.

It's important to say that there are several types of leukemia, and I broached the subject here only.

The Portuguese League Against Cancer is a cultural association and social services, private and of public utility, which promotes primary and secondary prevention of cancer, social support and the humanization of cancer patient care and training and research in oncology.

The purpose:
  • Disseminate information on Cancer and promote health education, especially for the prevention;
  • Contribute to solving the situation of cancer patients at all stages of the natural history of disease;
  • Cooperate with the institutions involved in oncology, including the Centers of the Portuguese Institute of Oncology Francisco Gentil;
  • Encourage and support training and research in oncology;
  • Establish and maintain relations with similar institutions, domestic and foreign;
  • Contribute to the humanization of social support and assistance to the cancer patient;
  • Develop, alone or in collaboration with other entities, structures for primary prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of cancer.

Trissomia 21 ou Síndrome de Down (Down Syndrome)

----

Hello. Now, at the class, we started to talk about chromossomal mutations and we dind't talk, yet, about Trisomy 21, a case of that mutations, so I decided to talk a little bit about that. Hope you like and found it interesting.

What happens is:

The number of chromosomes in human genome is 46 (23 from mum and 23 from dad), featuring in 23 pairs.
In 1958, geneticist Jérôme Lejeune saw that in case of Down syndrome, there is an error in the distribution and, instead of 46, the cells receive chromosomes 47 and this extra chromosome 21 is connected to the pair. Then came the wordthat Trisomy 21 is the result of primary non-disjunction, which canoccur in both meiotic divisions and in both parents. The process that occurs in the cell is identified by a non-pairing ofchromosomes in a manner appropriate to the poles duringanaphase called, so one of the gametes receive twochromosomes 21 and the other none.There are three main types of chromosomal abnormalities orvariations, in trisomy 21
• simple trisomy) the person has 47 chromosomes in every cell, the cause of simple trisomy of chromosome 21 is a chromosomalnon-disjunction.
• translocation: the extra chromosome pair 21 is "on" in anotherchromosome. In this case though individual has 46chromosomes, it is a carrier of Trisomy 21.
• mosaic: the genetic alteration is committed only part of the cells,ie, some cells have 47 chromosomes and other 46.

It's okay to be different. Every person deserves a chance to be happy!

Projeto Genoma Humano

---

At biology class, our teacher started to talk about genetic material, so I decided to look for some information about that subject... When I was looking for Human Genetic Manipulation, which as been linked to issues of ethics, creating many discussions, I found the Human Genome Project, which, I confess, I didn't know about. Well, I though that was interesting to bring it here and to talk about.

It is an international project, founded in 1990, which aimed to name all human genes and identification of all nucleotides that compose them. With the initiative of several National Institutes of Health, international laboratories started working together (forming the Consortium International Human Genome Sequencing), in order to sequence one by one, the genes that encode proteins of the human body and still some DNA sequences are not genes.

The project was completed on April14, 2003, and in a statement it was announced that the project had been successful with 99% of sequencing the human genome with an accuracy of 99,99%.

But this project also sought to adress ethical, legal and social issues involved. The project leaders believed that the discovery of the position of each gene, and its composition, would be valuable for diagnosis and cure of many diseases such as cancer, obesity, diabetes, autoimmune diseases and hypertension. Critics of the project, however, warned to the danger of misuse of genetic information. Jobseekers, for example, could be refused on the basis of tests that can reveal genetic predisposition to certain diseases, such as alcoholism.

Immediate Results

Were sequenced all the genes, about 25.000 and constituted just over 20% of total human genetic material. For technological limitations, about 1% of the genome can't be sequenced because it has many repetitions of nitrogenous bases (centromeres and telomeres of chromosomes, for example). It is also important to say that most of the human genome seems to have no coding and is probably only for structural and regulatory.

All the genes that had their sequence determined, approximately 50% encode proteins of known function.

Overall Results

Despite these shortcomings, the conclusion of genome is already facilitating the development of more potent drugs, the understading os many human genetic diseases and also facilitating the implementation of new genome projects.

The HGP has completed over 1800 discoverys of disease genes, and facilitates the identification of other genes associated with diseases. In addition, at least 350 biotechnology products resulting from the knowledge generated by the HGP will be undergoing clinical trials. The tools developed in HGP still serve to characterize the genomes of other important organisms.

And actually, I agree somewhat with both sides. It is certainly a launching pad for all the science related to human life : the knowledge of genes allows us a greater efficiency in fighting diseases and implementation of their treatments and medications. This,is really excellent in this regard. But usually this type of project have always a but, and as the critics said there shouldn't be an abuse of such information at the level of genetic manipulation: I understand that they can do it but just in order to treat or even cure diseases, and not for the purpose of requiring perfection. (aesthetic level, to improve aspects of physical competitions (doping), etc.).
And in your opinion, what do you think??
